As students walk through the door of Room 114, they experience more than just their average class with the usual lectures, never-ending homework, and boring books. In this particular room. Students there take part in an enjoyable elective: Chorus. Leading the class is Mrs. Peters, whose love of the art of music is reflected through the success of all her students each day.
“Mrs. Peters is the nicest person you’ll ever meet. And she really cares about the music department at SHS, which motivates her students as a result,” stated Senior Stephanie Floyd, who has been a part of Spotsy’s Choir for four years.
As apart of their normal routine, the class participates in vocal warm-ups, such as scales. Occasionally they perform body warm-ups as well to fully prepare themselves to sing. After warm-ups, they do sight-singing, which entails reading and performing a piece of written music. Aside from that, they work on any songs – as a class or individually – that they are preparing to perform at a future event. Currently the SHS Choir is preparing for a district festival on March 18 that will be hosted by Chancellor High School.
“It’s basically what we work towards all year,” explained Floyd.
Recently, the SHS Choir hosted “Karaoke Knight” where all SHS students had the chance to come out and sing for pure fun. They set up the karaoke machine, and anyone who wanted to participate had the opportunity to let their voices be heard.
While this is a fun event for the students to get to know one another, it also benefits the choir as a fundraiser. The money they raise goes to a combination of necessary as well as fun expenses: competitions, field trips, microphones, speakers, and their trip to district auditions.
