Mrs. Lisa Rothlisberger assesses her students’ knowledge of genetics in a slightly unconventional way. Rather than bore students with a traditional pencil and paper type test, Mrs. Rothlisberger requires her students to choose a specific genetic disorder and conduct research on it, which the students then use to create a brochure.
Mrs. Rothlisberger has designed the project so that it emphasizes the usage of multiple resources as well as proper source citation. Also, students are able to choose the genetic disorder which interests them most, as some students may actually know an individual who suffers from a genetic disorder. According to Mrs. Rothlisberger students’ reaction to the project has been, “positive. They seem kind of proud of themselves when they see their brochures hanging on the wall.”
