“Hey!” A booming voice yelled to the left of me, making me shriek and drop my book that I was currently reading. I looked over startled to see Katie smiling brightly at me, trying not to laugh. I scowled at her and picked my book off the floor where it fell.
“What,” I said through clenched teeth. “is wrong with you?”
“Nothing, I just enjoy scaring the crap out you.” She said with a shrug as she walked around, her brown hair swishing behind her, and sat on the seat opposite of mine. “It’s my favorite hobby.”
“Well I suggest you get a new one.” I murmured as I scan through my book looking for the place where I was reading before being rudely interrupted by my so called best friend.
“Naw, I’m perfectly fine with this one.” She said, having obviously heard me. “So what are you reading now?” I shifted the book so that the title, Pride and Prejudice, was visible to her. A look of recognition flashed in her blue eyes, which was to be expected as this was my fifth time reading the book. Though if you looked at the book you wouldn’t be able to tell that it had been read at all, the binding looking just the same way it did when the book was put together at the factory it was manufactured at. That is how all my books looked like though, I liked to keep them in prime condition. It was the one thing in my room that I wanted people to notice first; that I kept my book case perfect and organized. “Why don’t you just cave and watch the movie?”
I looked at her like she was crazy, “Because I refuse to conform like the rest of the people my age and rely on the entertainment industry to keep me entertain when I can do so without spending money on Movies and Music.” I shut my book with a snap. Getting up, I walked over to my book case and putting it back in its proper place. I’ll have to start reading it from the beginning tomorrow, unless I decide to head to the bookstore and pick up something new to read. “Besides, I heard from Jelly that the movie cut out very important parts that were essential to the plot of it.”
“So says the online friend.” Katie sighed. I turned around to see the end of her eye roll. “I for one thoroughly enjoyed it; the actor who played Mr. Darcy was unbelievably gorgeous!” I laughed at her fainting performance.
“Come on, let’s go mess with Danny. He should be at work by now and I’m in the mood for some good coffee.” Her eyes lit up with excitement. She literally jumped off the seat, grabbed my wrist and proceeded to drag me through my house and right out of it. All you had to do was mention her crush and she would push and hurt whoever was in her way to get to him. It surprised me when I learned last year that my best friend had a crush on our other best friend.
Though, now knowing, it was bluntly obvious to me that she would eventually have a thing for him. He was everything she was attracted to: bright green eyes, long red hair pulled into a pony tail at the base of his neck, tall and lanky with just a hint of muscle showing when he lifted heavy objects. He was her dream boy and it was just a plus that they both tended to like the same bands and video games.
Walking down the street towards the Cozy Cafe where Danny worked at, I noticed a lot of people in large groups chatting excitedly, all wearing a shirt with the same name on it. I looked at Katie questioningly; she was always in touch with what was going on around our city and tend to fill me in on it even if it was something I wasn’t interested in. She was the reason why I knew names of bands and singers without actually listening to them and knowing what they look like. She quickly understood my look and began explaining at once.
“Ok so there’s this huge concert happening this weekend at the Grand Oval with this new hot band called Slaverz. Apparently their all the rage now but they will probably only last for so long, just like all the other bands that people said we’re all the rage or whatever and were going to make it big.” I nodded my head in understand, though I really hadn’t understand most of it. But I suppose not taking part in the Media and Entertainment industries did that to you, made you unaware of things and meanings.
“Oh, are you going to go to the concert then?” I asked her.
“Well…I want to but I don’t have anyone to go with, and I so don’t want to go alone. I’m not that pathetic. I would ask you to go with me but you’re all against the M and the E Industry.” She said rolling her eyes. “And I would ask Danny but..well..” She trailed off shyly, blushing.
“You’re scared.” I teased her, elbowing her lightly. She glared at me.
“I am not scared.”
“Then why don’t you ask him?”
“Because…well…Because…JUST BECAUSE!” She stumbled over her reason. “Besides,” She said bashfully.”I’m sort of hoping he’ll ask me.” I smiled at her and awed. “Shut it,” she murmured. After walking and talking about nonsense for another ten minutes we finally arrived at The Cozy Cafe, the hang out of the neighborhood. It was mainly popular to high scholars as those were the ones who mainly drink any source of caffeine. When you walk through the door, the bell attach to it dinging to alert workers that people have arrived, the aroma was over powering, instantly waking you up as soon as you walked through the door.
It was our favorite place to hang out at. Couches were set around the perimeter of the place providing comfort for everyone. There were single chair set up in the middle, pressed back to back against one another for those that came alone to relax.
“Hello welcome to…oh hey guys.” Danny said smiling brightly at us from behind the counter.”What’s up?”
“Nothing much, just came by to talk to you and for the coffee.” Katie said leaning on the counter. I smiled and nodded my head.
“In that case, what can I get you?” He said in businesslike manner.
“The usual,” We said together. Danny rolled his eyes and chuckled as he typed in our orders.
“$8.75.” We both forked over our money to him and moved to the waiting area. “So what have you guys been up to?” He asked as he made our drinks, Carmel frappuccino.
“Same old, same old.” I replied. “I heard there was a band in town though, something with a S. Saver?” Katie elbowed me, her eyes wide. I gave her a innocent look and shrugged.
“Slaverz. Yeah I was meaning to ask you, well you Katie, if you wanted to go see them with me?” He asked her, I looked over at her and smirked. Her cheeks were tinted red but there was a smile on her face.
“Yeah, totally!”
“Great!” He said smiling at her. He looked over me and his smile damped some. “I’d invite you to Ri but…”
“I know.” I said with a shrug. He smiled at me again and gave us our drinks. “So when do you get a break?”
