The soft delicate music silenced the audience as the soloist played Bach cello suite No.1. The strumming of that instrument was done by Junior Melissa Graulich at Spotsy’s winter orchestra concert.

Starting at the ripe age of seven Melissa Graulich, better known as Missy, played the violin in a small private school in New York City, then when she moved to Virginia she switched to playing the cello, which is a larger form of the violin but held differently and played on a base clef.

“I love playing cello. After playing in middle school orchestra, I realized this is something that I’m going to do for the rest of my life,” said Graulich.

Graulich is inspired by many musicians. Whether it’s the saxophone or French horn, music is something that tunes her spirits.

“Lena Horne is one person in particular that inspires me greatly. She is my great aunt and she was a famous jazz singer,” said Graulich.

Lena Horne was an actress/singer in the early 1940’s to the late 90’s and held a very prestigious career. She won many life-time achievement awards and even a few Grammys.  Being a descendant of a prominent person definitely attributed to Graulich’s success as a musician herself.

“Having music in my life has opened the door to many opportunities such as having the privilege of playing at all-county award ceremonies, talent shows, and many other local events,” said Graulich.

Graulich hopes her talent will take her into the teaching business, “I would love to teach children to learn how to play a musical instrument; it’s something I think everyone should learn how to do.”

Graulich said, “For now I just want people to see me and say ‘hey that’s Missy! She kicks butt on cello.”
