Spotsy High’s school store earned some much deserved recognition for all their hard work throughout the year when they were awarded gold medal certification by the National DECA at beginning of March.
In the state of Virginia, there are 200 DECA programs like our school store; out of those 200 programs there are fourteen stores that received a gold medal. Spotsylvania High School is proudly one of those recipients. Not only was Spotsy one of those fourteen, but they are also the only school in Spotsylvania county that took the challenge.
Every five years, the school store has to be certified; every year, they must renew their certification. This is done by compiling mounds of information from that year. The store managers, Brittany Durante and Bryn Huxoll, had to put together a forty-page presentation about everything the store had done that year. This project included book keeping, changes to the store, new merchandise, and much more. According to Mr. Chadwick, the faculty adviser, it is a very detailed process that requires a lot of time and some major dedication. After adding some pictures and finalizing all their information, they save it on a flash drive and send it away. The store is then judged, not on how well the store did, but how well the presentation was organized. For most, this is quite a challenge, but that didn’t stop Mr. Chadwick and his students.
The managers and Mr. Chadwick work very hard at keeping the store up and running while still being very organized, and it showed in their presentation. It doesn’t stop there, though; Spotsy will be going to the ICDC (International Career Development Conference) in Louisville, Kentucky, in April. Some congratulations are defiantly in order for earning such an awesome achievement.
