For students who participate in school sports and are religious, there is a club at Spotsylvania High School called the Fellowship of Christian Athletes where Sposty athletes can discuss their faith and meet new people who share similar beliefs.

The club is sponsored by Mr. Curt Rose, a world history teacher, and is run by Spotsylvania High School senior Brandi Lumpkin.

“FCA or Fellowship of Christian Athletes is a club for athletes that are Christians. Anyone can join even they are non-believers or observe other religions,” said Lumpkin.

FCA meets every Thursday during the second half of Flex in the school auditorium.  The meetings start at 10:55 and end at 11:20.

“We do a lot of activities at FCA. At the beginning, we read excerpts from the Bible and talk about them. At the end of each period, we get down on our knees and bow our heads down to pray. After this, the students report for their third class,” said Lumpkin.

FCA member Olivia Jarrell, who is a sophomore, explained, “I think FCA is good for people who are religious and don’t have time to pray during the school day. I go to church a lot, and I don’t usually pray in school. But now, I could do both. Plus, I love the activities we do and I would continue throughout my high school career.”

Jared Steigerwald, a sophomore who goes to FCA regularly, also enjoys the activites and plans to participate in FCA throughout his high school career. “FCA is a pretty good club because I can connect with religion and have something to do over Flex,” he said.

Mr. Rose’s job is basically to monitor the students to make sure there is no trouble.

“Because of the rule that each club has to have a teacher as a supervisor, I watch over the students in the auditorium to make sure they don’t cause trouble. Now, all of them behave because they want to be there,” said Mr. Rose.

Brandi recommends any student to join FCA no matter what religion they are, and Mr. Rose agrees.

“No matter how religious or athletic you are, you can still join FCA,” said Lumpkin.
