Mr. Davis responds to governors proposed budget cuts

On February 21, Governor Bob McDonnell recommended cutting $2.3 billion dollars from the state budget. These cuts will mean increased school class sizes and less money for public school funding. Over the next two and a half years, state funding for public schools will be cut by nearly $730 million.
Mr. Rusty Davis, Spotsylvania High School’s principal, agreed to answer a few questions about what this means for SHS.
TKT: What do you think of Gov. McDonnell’s budget cut?
RD: The proposal is already up in the air so if approved, the Board of Supervisors basically control and determine what to do with each schools’ money. But the process is greater than that. The superintendent looks at the proposal, then the School Board makes a few adjustments, and then the Board of Supervisors make the decision. By May10, we will know what the Board of Supervisors have agreed on. If it’s approved, we will have to make severe and tough decisions.
TKT: Do you think that this has affected Spotsylvania County Schools?
RD: Yes, if approved, the class sizes, certain programs, athletics, teaching positions, and transportation will affect every function that we have in the county.
TKT: Do you think that the budget has affected Spotsylvania High in any way?
RD: Yes, it will because it could hurt anything that we have running in the school like equipment and such. We wouldn’t have much money than we have had in the previous years.
TKT: What are some changes to help the budget cut at our school?
RD: We all need to be fiscally responsible by buying things long term. Boosters can also be a great help with our school and have people help out. We also need to make sure of what we have and not make unnecessary copies of papers in the copier.
TKT: Any ideas on saving money for our school?
RD: Well, we can save energy for the building by turning of lights off in classrooms because the electric bill each month is about $30,000 as it is. We can also save energy by turning off computers. This would save us money by 3%. Also, if the students cut down the vandalism and stop destroying textbooks then we can save a buck or two since it wouldn’t be coming out of the school’s budget.
