Tips for picking a major in college

Many college-bound students and college students face the difficult task of deciding what exactly they would like to major in while in college. Sometimes just are undecided about their interests, their interest might change, or they are stuck between two different majors. The last obstacle is overcome by declaring a double major.

According to NC State University, some questions you should be asking yourself are:

  • What are my options?
  • What do I do next?
  • How do I start?
  • What kinds of majors are available?
  • Who am I?

In an article by Stephany Springer, she remembers struggling her first years of college trying to decide on a major. She said, “It is so hard asking an immature 19-year-old to make a decision that ultimately will control the fate of the rest of their life. Yes, I will be the first to say I should have listened to society and my mother -money does matter when you are living with a family. I would like to be able to just say do what you love, but unfortunately that does not always pay the bills.”

Deciding on a major requires time to make an educated decision on whether or not it will benefit you for your career. Money shouldn’t be the only factor that stops you from choosing a career. To help with your decision and what path you want to go, look on collegeboard.com for more information.

Also, students should definitely consider looking at college guides, the course catalogs, academic advisors, and the college’s websites. There are many majors – all you need to do is find what makes you happy in order to better yourself and have a great career.

Don’t take too long to decide on your major.  It’s better to know what you will be studying during your first year of college. Sooner is better than later.
