According to the AAA, gas prices have gone up 47 cents; from $2.64 to $3.11 in the last 12 months.
“The gas prices in the U.S. are just outrageous. It’s getting way to expensive.” said Toni Thomas. “Why are the gas prices such a big problem? Why don’t we just use the oil we have reserved?”
According to the director of Public Citizen’s energy program, Tyson Slocum, “Releasing petroleum stocks from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve isn’t going to do anything to reduce prices.” He believes rising oil prices are due to speculators and the bank. “There are no supply shortages of oil in the United States, and, in fact, refiners in the United States are operating at well below capacity … because demand for gasoline continues to be fairly anemic in the U.S.,” he stated.
“I just don’t understand why the gas prices are so expensive though, it is so crazy, and I heard that it was because of war, that should have nothing to do with the U.S. raising gas prices,” said Ronnie Wolfrey.
There are several theories about gas prices spreading through the area.
“The gas prices are so high because of Libya. Libya cut off 2 percent of their gas supply and we get our oil from them,” stated Colby Huber. “My friend and I carpool every morning to work; I think it saves her and me more money that way. We both contribute to money towards gas, and it is cheaper for us to both put money towards gas to one car then trying to afford gas for two.”
Iowa State conducted a poll on if state resident’s have been using public transportation and/or carpooling more often due to fuel prices rising. 46% of the 21,901 people that voted said they haven’t changed their habits. 35% of the people that voted said that neither of the options are available to them.
