Spotsylvania High School offers a lot of sports, clubs, and groups for all the students that attend the school; however, there are few students that take advantage of the opportunities to join these clubs and sports. That’s why Spotsylvania High School students needs to get more involved.

There are about 1,200 students that attend Spotsy High. Some of the 23 clubs, associations, and societies that students can join or be accepted into are: drama club, environmental club, forensics club, French club, German club, Latin club, Spanish club, Yearbook, Newspaper, Literary Magazine, Math League, Battle of the Brain Team, James Farmers Scholars, FFA, DECA, Family Career and Community Leaders of America, Future Business Leaders of America, and National Honor Society.

Spotsy also offers 17 sports, which include baseball, softball, boys’ basketball, girls’ basketball, boys’ cross country, girls’ cross country, boys’ soccer, girls’ soccer, boys’ tennis, girls’ tennis, girls’ volleyball, field hockey, cheerleading, golf, swimming, football and wrestling. The sports coaches are seeing fewer and fewer players every year. Some of them don’t even get to have a junior varsity team because they don’t have enough players to make one, just enough for varsity.

Girls’ basketball only has a varsity team. It wouldn’t be that way if the other girls in the school would have the motivation to tryout.

Fortunately, boys’ basketball has both varsity and JV, but they didn’t have to make cuts. Everybody that tried out made the team.

Jon Hall said, “All you need on a basketball team is 10 players, because you have five as starters and five on the bench.” To their advantage they didn’t need extra players.

Also, our school’s swim team has only seventeen team members and only seven of them are girls. They competed against King George and their swim team has about 3 times the amount of swimmers Spotsy has.

“We can’t even win a swim meet with the amount of swimmers we have. Even if we all came in first,” said Morganne Mcmanus, a swimmer for Spotsylvania High School.

Carlos Ramirez, a three-year Spotsy swimmer, explained that they had very few people try out for the swim team.

There are a lot of lazy people that attend Spotsylvania High School. If those students came out and tried out for a sport or even joined a club, then I bet they would have fun. They would probably be proud of themselves for actually doing something. Sports help you stay active and fit. Clubs help you learn more and meet new people. The students in Spotsy High need to be more involved in our community.
