Courage, determination, and fun are key words to describe the Special Olympics; they are also what three young basketball stars at our school endeavor to attain when it comes to the sport they love. Sophomores Nicole Alsop and Mary Kate Tosick and Freshman Becky Floyd are members of the Spotsy “Mean Machine” basketball team which is coached by Earth Science teacher Mrs. Dale Floyd.

Floyd had the privilege of coaching the girls in November and recently recalled, “What I enjoy most about coaching them is their eagerness to learn the game and seeing a strong desire in them to do well.”

This is Spotsy’s first year having a Special Olympics basketball team and – even with the bad weather – the girls still pulled through and made it to states. “I was really stressed that day but I’m happy we made it to states,” said Becky when asked what her reaction was when she found out she’d made it.

Out of the three champs, Becky is the only one who  isn’t a stranger to the Special Olympics. Her ambitions in sports have led her to states for bowling, swimming, soccer, and other competitive sports making her an asset to the team. “I want to go to Nationals!” Becky exclaimed when asked where she thinks basketball will take her.

While Nicole just likes having fun and hanging out with her friends, Mary Kate hopes basketball will take her to the WNBA.

States will be held in Stafford on March 19th and 20th. All the girls, along with their coach, are looking forward to having a good time and doing their best.

According to Floyd, ”The kids enthusiasm for the sport has been a joy to watch – also seeing them develop as a team and have  fun.” Although the girls have big dreams, their skill in the sport will definitely help them to achieve.
