The Multicultural Club’s main focus is on bringing people together and making a difference in the community. Mrs. Sherie Stevens and Mr. Myron Matthias, two P.E. teachers are Spotsylvania High School, are resurrecting the Multicultural Club, has not been active for fifteen years since the county banned most non-academic clubs.

The club is a place for all ethnic backgrounds to come together and learn from one another.

“There is a huge need here at Spotsy,” Mrs. Stevens said.

Mrs. Stevens is hoping to bring people from the community in to talk to the students and tell them their stories.

“I want students to listen to other people’s stories and learn from them and see why groups struggle,” Stevens said. She wants members of the multicultural club to have someone from the community to confide in.

The goal for this club is for students to see people of the same ethnic background succeed and helping them believe that they can too.

“Kids have a tendency to hang out with others that are similar to them even though the have different views,” Stevens said. Another goal for this club is to diminish some of the stereotyping in the school and eventually in the community.

Throughout the year, Stevens wants the students to take charge of the club and present ideas and goals that they can further pursue.

“By the end of the year I want to put together a multicultural fair,” Stevens said.

Daniel Brooks, a senior who joined the club, said, “It is a great way to be interactive between the school and the community.”
